METRO magazine, the Twin Cities lifestyle publication, announced today that it will suspend operations next month after six years in business.
METRO editor-in-chief Dana Raidt confirmed the news Wednesday afternoon: "It's bittersweet," she said. "When you have a publication that's not making the money you think it should, it's really frustrating and it's hard to stretch resources. So there's a little bit of relief, but it's also really disappointing and I think there will be a huge void in local media with us gone."
Minneapolis-based Tiger Oak Media publishes the magazine. The company said it's turning attention to other products that are having more financial success.
Raid called being the editor of METRO her "dream job," and said the company is still figuring out staff reallocations. While nothing has been confirmed yet, she said there are possibly some opportunities for staff to take other jobs within the company. The magazine has four full-time employees and several part-timers, freelancers and contractors.
Becky Lang interned at METRO during college 2 1/2 years ago writing about the local arts and culture scene. Lang, now a copy writer at Zeus Jones marketing agency in Minneapolis, says she's not entirely surprised to hear about the magazine's demise, but remembers METRO being a "thoughtful place to work ... committed to covering what wasn't being covered in the local arts and entertainment scene."
"I think a lot of people in the local journalism community are really saddened by this," she said. "Especially after hearing about the closing of the local Onion A.V. Club. The journalism industry, as a whole, is struggling."
METRO's final issue, which will celebrate its sixth anniversary, will hit newsstands in September.
