Suspect charged in rape of 15-year-old
An armed man grabbed a 15-year-old girl off a sidewalk in the middle of the night in a north Minneapolis neighborhood, put a gun to her head and raped her in one alley, then assaulted her again minutes later in another alley, according to authorities. Charles E. Stevenson, 34, was charged Tuesday in Hennepin County District Court with first-degree criminal sexual conduct. He remains jailed in lieu of $250,000 bail. Stevenson also was charged with violating the terms of his being a state-registered predatory offender. He was convicted in 2003 in Hennepin County of rape, with the victim also being a 15-year-old girl. The latest alleged assaults took place between 1:15 and 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 2.
Driver who killed 3 sentenced on repeat DWI
A Farmington man who pleaded guilty this summer to driving while intoxicated — 10 years after killing three brothers in a 2004 drunken-driving crash — will return to prison for a five-year sentence. Dakota County Judge Tim Wermager sentenced Boe Barlage, 33, on Thursday to 60 months in prison, with credit for 107 days served in Dakota County jail, where he has been since a May 14 DWI arrest in Lakeville. In August, Barlage pleaded guilty to two felony counts of driving while intoxicated.
Barlage spent 5½ years in prison for his role in the crash that killed three brothers on Oct. 10, 2004, when he swerved into a car driven by Matthew Backstrom. Backstrom, 20, and his brothers Jacob, 17, and Justin, 16, were all killed. Barlage pleaded guilty to three counts of criminal vehicular homicide.
Woman gets 15 years in fiancé's stabbing
A St. Paul woman was sentenced Thursday to 15 years in prison for fatally stabbing her fiancé in May. Sherry A. Henderson, 48, tearfully apologized to her family and the family of the victim, Addison Hillard, at her sentencing in Ramsey County District Court. "I never meant to hurt him," Henderson said. "He's a good man with a big heart." Henderson pleaded guilty in October to second-degree unintentional murder for killing Hillard. She stabbed him with a knife after arguing about a female friend the couple had just entertained in their St. Paul apartment. She testified that she was "really intoxicated."
Man admits drugging, assaulting houseguest
A Plymouth man pleaded guilty Thursday to drugging his daughter's friend, 20, then sexually assaulting her. Michael Bruce Cameron, 53, pleaded guilty to one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct just as his trial was set to begin, said Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman. He will be sentenced Jan. 8.

Woman reportedly raped on way to work
A 36-year-old woman told police she was raped Tuesday as she walked to work, St. Paul police said Thursday. Police spokesman Sgt. Mike Ernster said the woman was walking on Old Hudson Road near Kennard Street about 7 p.m. Tuesday when she was approached by two men in dark clothing and ski masks. One of the men spoke to her in Spanish and asked for her money. The other man pulled out a handgun and ripped a gold necklace from her neck, then took her wallet before fleeing. The remaining suspect pulled a knife on her before raping her, police said. After he ran away, the woman continued on to her workplace, where she called authorities. She was taken to Regions Hospital. No arrests have been made.

School aide charged in sexual assault on teen
A middle school instructional aide in was charged Thursday with coaxing an eighth-grade girl into a secluded spot in the building and molesting her, telling his victim "you're mine." Jarrell P. Smith, 31, of Minneapolis, was charged in Hennepin County District Court with second-degree criminal sexual conduct, given that he held a position of authority over the teen, and fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct because of the girl's age. Smith remains jailed in lieu of $250,000 bail. Smith was arrested at his home Tuesday.
