National Murrow wins

last updated June 11, 2013

The Star Tribune on Wednesday won two National 2013 Edward R. Murrow multimedia journalism awards, including for overall excellence in online news for the third time in four years.

Photographers Jim Gehrz and David Joles won for best documentary, working with reporter Curt Brown on the multimedia project "In the Footsteps of Little Crow." The documentary looked at one of the darkest chapters in Minnesota's past, through the rise and fall of one Dakota leader during the U.S.-Dakota war of 1862.

The Star Tribune composite for overall excellence showcased video from summer flooding in the Duluth area to an investigative report on a war vet who tried to commit suicide, children at risk in Minnesota daycare facilities and brain trauma in former NFL athletes.

The Murrow Awards are granted by the Radio Television Digital News Association, the largest professional organization serving the electronic news profession. Since the award nominations opened to newspapers four years ago, Star Tribune has won a national Murrow award in the category of Local Online News Operation each year — the only newspaper in the country to do so.

Among the honorees from the Star Tribune:
Photography & editing: Bruce Bisping, Kevin Diaz, McKenna Ewen, Jim Gehrz, Matt Gillmer, Shari Gross, Jerry Holt, David Joles, Marlin Levison, Rich Tsong-Taatarii.

Reporters: Curt Brown, Mark Brunswick, Rachel E. Stassen-Berger, Colin Covert, Mark Craig, Jason Gonzalez, Baird Helgeson, Jean Hopfensperger, Neal Justin, Mike Kaszuba, Brad Schrade, Jim Souhan, Dan Wiederer.
