A Brooklyn Center man who was pulled from a Maple Grove pond Friday night has died, authorities announced Saturday.

Andrew M. Pitts, 20, died shortly before 10 p.m. Friday, about two hours after a witness called 911 to report that a man had disappeared in a holding pond on Elm Creek Boulevard just off Main Street. He was in the water for an hour before rescue crews located him in the dark pond, which was partly covered by ice.

He was unconscious when he was pulled from the water. He was taken to Maple Grove Hospital, where he died. The Hennepin Country medical examiner listed the cause of death as drowning.

Officials are investigating what prompted him to go into the pond.
