King of Kings Lutheran Church is celebrating its 30th anniversary by doing what it does best: making music.

This summer the Woodbury church's ensembles, choirs and worship teams collaborated to record "Glory to God Forever," an album featuring 17 traditional hymns and contemporary favorites from its deep repertoire.

"It's an all-around album that people could pop in and feel as if they were at worship," said Chris Vorrie, worship director at the church of about 3,000 members. "They can take what they hear in worship every week home. They appreciate the opportunity to praise God in their car or at home."

The album, recorded during May and June in the church sanctuary, includes renditions of "How Great Thou Art" and "The Lord's Prayer" and upbeat numbers such as "No Not One" and "Sing Hallelujah, Praise the Lord!" The church sold 250 of the discs during a presale and has 400 more on hand to sell. They are $20 apiece at the church office at 1583 Radio Drive. The project also can be downloaded for $17 from www.tuneswoon.com.

The church has long been known for its strong music ministry. Vorrie said the album will provide the church with an opportunity to reach those outside the church walls. He said several of those who sang on "Glory to God Forever" came to the church because of its music ministry.

In addition to appearing at four services the church holds each weekend, teams that lead contemporary worship have played at the Union Gospel Mission. An ensemble called All the King's Men has sung the national anthem at games of the Timberwolves, Twins and Swarm, the state's professional indoor lacrosse team. The King's Choir, made up of about 60 adults, sings at weekly church services, puts on a Christmas production annually and has appeared at the biannual Woodbury Choral Festival.

Vorrie spent a year choosing the tracks for "Glory to God Forever," picking numbers that were favorites of choir members but also touched those in the congregation profoundly.

"When we worship through music, others will be able to do the same," Vorrie said.

This is the second album the church has made. In 2002, it released a disc to mark its 20th anniversary. Vorrie wanted to mark the 30-year milestone with a project to showcase the blessings of a "fabulous music ministry" and "show what we have been blessed with here."
