The Wolves this afternoon waived combo guard Mo Ager, a move that paves the way for them to sign former Utah Jazz and former NBA Development League guard Sundiata Gaines.

Gaines is the player the Wolves targeted after yesterday's four-man point guard workout in Sacramento.

If he indeed is signed, he will be insurance -- more of a natural point guard, which Ager was not -- while questions remain over when Luke Ridnour and Jonny Flynn will be healthy and ready to play again.

Gaines is listed at 6-1, but he's strong and well built. The former Georgia guard also likes to push the ball, can get to the foul line, will play some defense but isn't a great shooter.

He was the D League guy called by the Jazz last winter and soon delivered a fairytale three-pointer at the buzzer that beat LeBron and the Cavs on a January night.

A few other things:

* The Wolves are targeting Wednesday's game against the Clippers for Jonny Flynn's return from July hip surgery. That's assuming, of course, he has no setbacks as he works daily to increase his mobility and conditioning.

* Big Al Jefferson will be in TNT's Atlanta studio with Kevin McHale (the guy who brought him to Minnesota), Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith late after tonight's doubleheader. (I believe the segment is being taped earlier this evening and then shown later).

* ESPN's Outside the Lines will profile Wolves prospect Ricky Rubio on Sunday at 8 a.m.

The segment is titled "Basketball's Man or Myth." Among those in the show who think he's overrated is Eric Musselman, former Wolves assistant coach and son of the former Wolves coach.

An except from it includes this:

"No, but you can never give a definitive 'Yes' until the right moment. Playing the NBA is a dream. Minnesota has my rights, and at the moment I'm very confident in them." – Ricky Rubio, on whether he's trying to force a trade from Minnesota or considering staying in Europe

There isn't much to this little video teaser other than a comparison between Barcelona's weather and Minnesota, but you can see him talk a bit in this clip:

UPDATE: In introducing Al Jefferson tonite from the TNT studios, McHale playfully said something linking Jefferson's knee injury and the end of his job as the team's boss.

That's when Chuck Barkley chimed in.

"Aw, Kev, I hate to break it to you, he's not the one who cost you your job," Barkley said. "Them other four rounders cost you your job."
