Edina students do well at state math tournament

Students from Edina High School took first place in the large-school category during last week's Minnesota High School Math League competition.

Tier 1 winners in the team competition were: Edina High School, first place, Wayzata High School, second place, and Mounds View High school, third place.

Tier 2 winners in the team competition were: Shattuck St. Mary, first place, Providence Academy, second place, and Cotter High School, third place.

In the individual competition, there was a tie for second place between Nathan Weckworth of Dassel-Cokato and Varun Mangalick of Mounds View. Michael Tang of Edina earned first place. Tang, a freshman, also won the Math Bowl, a quick-response competition between 10 of the top Minnesota math students, and top all-around student of the year.

In the all-around student competition, Mangalick took second place and Henry Wang of Century High School in Rochester took third place.

Blessed Trinity celebrates its 20th anniversary

In commemoration of its 20th anniversary, Blessed Trinity Catholic School will host several events this week.

A special mass will be held at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, at St. Peter's Church. Bishop Lee Piché and the Knights of Columbus will be the special guests. Hopkins

Westmoreland named Person of the Year

The Hopkins Business and Civic Association has named Barb Westmoreland its Person of the Year, an award given to residents who have made a long-term commitment to the community through service.

Westmoreland, who has worked for Hopkins Public Schools for 23 years, currently serves as the volunteer coordinator for the district and represents Hopkins Public Schools through her involvement with several civic groups. She has been active in the association for 17 years, including serving an eight-year term on the board.

She also served on the Hopkins Center for the Arts board for eight years. In 2011, she was grand marshal in the Hopkins Raspberry Festival parade.

Westmoreland is most publicly known for her work with Empty Bowls, a fundraiser for local food shelves that boasts hot soup and cool bowls and involves nearly every community entity. This is Westmoreland's 16th year coordinating the event, which has raised a combined total of quarter-million dollars for ICA Food Shelf and Resource West.
