Beautiful baritone

Acclaimed Welsh baritone Jeremy Huw Williams is guest artist for this week's excellent Mondays@Minnesota recital. The program features Fauré's song cycle "La Bonne Chanson" as well as songs by Minneapolis-based David Evan Thomas and Welsh composer Grace Williams. Pianist Paula Fan accompanies. The Rose Ensemble is joined by Piffaro, a group of early music instrumentalists from Philadelphia, for "Welcome the People," a landmark choral concert marking the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Ace on bass

Double bassists don't often step into the solo spotlight. But this week's St. Paul Chamber Orchestra program gives principal bass Zachary Cohen the opportunity to show his paces. Cohen pairs with SPCO principal violinist Kyu-Young Kim for Bottesini's "Gran duo concertante," which should be a lively bout of musical jousting. Also on the program are Tchaikovsky's string piece "Souvenir de Florence" and Rossini's frisky overture "Il Signor Bruschino." (7:30 p.m. Thu., Temple Israel, Mpls.; 11 a.m. Fri. & 8 p.m. Sat., Ordway Concert Hall, St. Paul; 2 p.m. Sun., Ted Mann Concert Hall, Mpls.; $11-$50, 651-291-1144 or thespco.org)

'Crocus Hill Ghost Story'

Zeitgeist opens its 40th season with "Crocus Hill Ghost Story," a multimedia creation by composer/flutist Julie Johnson, writer Cheri Johnson and actor D.J. Mendel. Video and visual projections help create the atmosphere of a haunted Victorian mansion on Summit Avenue, where dark things have happened. (7:30 p.m. Thu., Fri. & Sat.; Studio Z, St. Paul; $10-$15, zeitgeistnewmusic.org)

Stravinsky in paint

Stravinsky's "The Soldier's Tale" tells the story of a man who trades his violin to the devil for limitless riches. Originally meant to be "read, played and danced," it inspired some of the composer's pithiest, most acerbic music. Music Saint Croix opens its 2017-18 season with an all-new take on "The Soldier's Tale," featuring Duluth painter Lee Zimmerman live-illustrating the action on a backlit silk panel. This enterprising concert also includes Arthur Foote's "At Dusk" and Jules Mouquet's "Pan and the Birds." (7 p.m. Fri. & Sat., Washington County Historic Courthouse, Stillwater; $10-$16, 651-430-9198 or musicsaintcroix.com)
