Alec Soth: Until Now

Opening Friday: With his books, blogs, summer camp and generous contributions to local art benefits, photographer Alec Soth is always out-and-about in the Twin Cities, when he's not jetting to Paris or Shanghai for photo shoots. So his deadpan documents of offbeat characters and lonely vistas are pretty familiar among his Minnesota photo fans. Still, it's been five years since Walker Art Center staged "Broken Manual," its quasi-retrospective of his work. Time for another sampler of the projects that secured his fame. "Alec Soth: Until Now" will feature 35 photos taken between 1998 and 2014, including images from "Sleeping by the Mississippi" (2004), "Broken Manual" (2010) and "Siren" (2012). Plus "Lake Calhoun," his 2014 tribute to Minnesota snowmen, recently published in the New York Times Magazine. He met "Natalia," shown here, on a fashion shoot. Shy guy Soth will be on hand for the opening festivities. (6-8 p.m. Friday, free opening party, Weinstein Gallery, 908 W. 46th St., Mpls. Ends May 10, free. 612-822-1722 or www.weinstein-gallery.com.)
