The Vikings came to terms with 10 undrafted free agents following Saturday's selection process and also agreed to give some other players a look on a tryout basis next weekend during their rookie minicamp at Winter Park.

One of those players is former Gophers cornerback Marcus Sherels. The Vikings had several executives and coaches on hand at the Gophers Pro Day on March 10 and that gave them an opportunity to get a look at linebacker Nate Triplett, whom Minnesota took in the fifth round.

But it's also likely that Sherels caught the attention of Vikings vice president of player personnel Rick Spielman, coach Brad Childress and company.

Kent Youngblood, who covers the Gophers for the Star Tribune, documented Sherels' Pro Day performance for the Star Tribune last month: "Sherels was timed between 4.37 and 4.41 seconds in the 40-yard dash, posted a 40-inch vertical jump, had a standing broad jump of 10 feet, 2 inches and was timed between 4.03 and 4.09 in the shuttle run. His 40 time, vertical jump and shuttle times would have put him among the top three cornerbacks at the recent NFL combine. Sherels, slowed by shoulder and ankle injuries during his junior and senior seasons, has also increased his weight 14 pounds to 175."

Even getting invited to the Organized Team Activities after receiving a tryout would be impressive so Sherels faces some long odds here. However, this is a positive first step.

Chip was in contact with local agent Chris Murray of Imani Sports this morning and found that in addition to Sherels, Murray also landed former Gophers tight end Nick Tow-Arnett a free-agent deal in Dallas after the draft. Two other former Gophers, center Jeff Tow-Arnett and defensive tackle Barrett Moen, will get tryouts in Tampa Bay and Seattle, respectively.

Update: Just so nobody thinks I'm trying to pull a fast one, there is a change with Moen. He is now going to get a tryout with the Vikings and not Seattle. Moen will tryout at defensive end next weekend's rookie camp.
