The U.S. team beat Germany 3-0 in the IIHF Men's World Championship on Sunday in Helsinki, Finland.

The Germans actually outshot the U.S., 30-29 but American goalie John Gibson stopped everything.

Defensemen Justin Faulk and Erik Johnson, two Minnesotans, each had an assist for the Americans who are now 5-1 in the preliminary round -- and assured of advancing to the quarterfinals later this week.

The U.S. plays Slovakia on Tuesday to finish preliminary round play.

T.J. Oshie, who played for Warroad in high school and North Dakota in college, will join the U.S team this week. He was added to the roster after the St. Louis Blues, his NHL team, was eliminated from the playoffs.

Another late addition at forward was Alex Galchenyuk of the Montreal Canadiens. He was already with the team on Sunday but did not play.

The Germans had two NHL players: defenseman Christian Ehrhoff of the Buffalo Sabres and forward Marcel Goc of the Florida Panthers.

When Oshie arrives, the U.S. team will have 22 forwards and defenseman and three goalies.
