Approximately 32,000 unionized employees for the state of Minnesota have ratified new two-year contracts, the unions said on Monday.

Members of the Minnesota Association of Professional Employees, representing about 13,000 workers, approved the contract with 97 percent voting in favor, the union said. It calls for across-the-board pay hikes of 3 percent in each of the two years and requires an additional 5 percent contribution by employees to health care costs, said union spokeswoman Leslie Sandberg.

Members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, representing about 19,000 workers, also announced a ratification vote Monday afternoon.

The contracts must go before a legislative panel, the Subcommittee on Employee Relations. If approved, it takes effect retroactive to July 1 and extends for two years, Sandberg said. The Legislature, which does not come back into session until Feb. 25, 2014, must also ratify the agreement.

John Pollard, a spokesman for Minnesota Management and Budget, which negotiates contracts with state unions, said 7 smaller state unions are in various stages of working toward a new two-year agreements.
