The Twins experienced an instant-replay teaching moment in the fifth inning Saturday when Ichiro Suzuki slid into second and was called safe with a stolen base.

Twins second baseman Brian Dozier, who took the throw from catcher Kurt Suzuki, didn't argue the call. "To be honest, after I scooped the throw I didn't know that I touched him, Dozier said. "I felt his arm hit my wrist a little."

But Dozier, indeed, had gotten the tag on Suzuki in time. Had the Twins challenged, the call would have been overturned.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was in his office watching the game — he was ejected in the third inning — and saw the replay.

"I saw it and I said right away, 'They are going to challenge that one,' " Gardenhire said.

The call from the dugout to video coordinator Sean Harlin's office never came. When Gardenhire investigated, he was told that Dozier's lack of reaction led to inaction. That was a big moment. Ichiro Suzuki went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single for the Yankees' only run, in a game the Twins won 2-1 in 11 innings.

"Sometimes it's the reaction of the player when he's [saying], 'I'm safe,' when they are sliding into second base like Dozier has a couple times and he's out by 18 yards," Gardenhire said. "And I go out there and challenge and look like an idiot.

"You just have to go on every close play. That's the way it is set up, and they can give you a thumbs up or thumbs down. We talked about it in there. That was an experience for us."

Santana update

Danny Santana is eligible to come off the disabled list on July 13, the final game before the All-Star break. Will the Twins activate the rookie for that game in Denver, instead of giving him four more days?

"If he's ready to go, we're going to activate him in Colorado," Twins General Manager Terry Ryan said.

Santana, who has a bone bruise near his left knee, is making progress with his rehabilitation. The Twins were considering bringing him on the upcoming road trip to Seattle and Colorado so he can work out with the team, but Ryan said that is unlikely.

If he is not activated, Santana could head out on a minor league rehab assignment during the All-Star break, then join the Twins in time for the July 18 home game against Tampa Bay.

"He's getting better daily," Ryan said, "and that's a good sign."

Futures worry?

Class AAA Rochester righthander Trevor May has been selected to pitch in the Futures Game on July 13 at Target Field, but he is on the seven-day disabled list because of a right calf muscle strain. The Twins would like for him to pitch before the Futures Game if he's going to pitch in the game.

"That would be nice," Ryan said. "Trying to give it every opportunity. We're still hopeful. "

May has begun playing catch, so he is making progress. But one setback could knock him out of the Futures Game.

Ryan indicated that May, 8-4 with a 2.94 ERA in 14 starts for the Red Wings, will be replaced on the roster if he can't pitch.

Etc.

• First baseman Joe Mauer (right oblique strain) is making progress but will not join the Twins for the road trip.

• Yankees catcher Brian McCann was a late scratch Saturday because of a sore left foot. X-rays were negative, and he is considered day-to-day.
