Animal quackers

There aren't many documentaries about Minnesota artists. There aren't many about wildlife painters, either. "The Million Dollar Duck" makes you wish there were more of both. The film is an engaging waddle through the U.S. government's annual Federal Duck Stamp Contest, in which the winners get the back of their work licked by anyone seeking a duck-hunting permit. It features our own Hautman brothers, immortalized in "Fargo," and Minneapolis Institute of Art security guard Rob McBroom, a thorn in the contest's side.

Behind the curtain

Bill Hader was robbed of an Emmy nomination for his sidesplitting performances in "Documentary Now!" He shows no signs of letting up in the second-season premiere of the ambitious series, co-created with Seth Meyers and Fred Armisen, that sends up doc formats. It re-imagines the heroes of D.A. Pennebaker's "The War Room," about Bill Clinton's campaign for president, as sex-obsessed grinders who won't hesitate to take a bullet to see their candidate take office.

Scared of the unknown

Creator Ryan Murphy has managed to keep a lid on details about the new season of "American Horror Story," aside from the fact that his go-to gal Sarah Paulson will return, along with Lady Gaga and Matt Bomer. One veteran not scheduled to pop by: Jessica Lange. But she hasn't completely left the Murphy household. The Minnesota native will headline the busy producer's 2017 anthology series on famous feuds, taking on the iconic role of Joan Crawford opposite Susan Sarandon's Bette Davis.
