Fantasy island

"Archer," the animated series that takes more cues from film noir than "The Simpsons," is setting its ninth season on Danger Island, where our hard-boiled hero tries to avoid killing the staff and guests at a Key Largo-ish resort. The action and deadpan humor are fast and furious in what continues to be the very best of adults-only cartoons.

Batter up!

"Brockmire" should be in a rehab center, not in a booth announcing baseball, but star/creator Hank Azaria isn't quite ready to put his wildly entertaining character on the road to recovery. In this second season, Jim Brockmire finds himself in New Orleans, which is like locking a grizzly bear in a honey factory. Amanda Peet is MIA in the first couple of episodes, but don't worry; she'll eventually pop up, if only to buy a round on Bourbon Street.

Meatball surgery

How many times will "Code Black" reinvent itself before it's seen as the next "ER" or "Grey's Anatomy"? In this Season 3 premiere, Rob Lowe's character is transformed into a doctor who seems more likely to be on a SWAT team than a hospital staff, while a first-year resident is somehow allowed to spend most of his rotation filming the world's least interesting documentary. Please, CBS: Do not resuscitate.
