Some of the coldest air of the winter is setting up the northern Plains fora dangerously cold start to the day on Tuesday.Low temperatures at least 20 degrees F below normal will be recorded from theMontana Divide east through most of North Dakota, northern Wyoming andnorthwestern South Dakota.
Temperatures in still colder areas of northern Montana into western NorthDakota will drop to 30 to perhaps 40 degrees below zero F. Williston, N.D.,along with Havre and Glasgow, Mont., may well become this cold.
Havre, for instance, has a good shot at breaking its Feb. 1 record low of 30degrees below zero F that was set in 1989. Glasgow would have to reach 46degrees below zero F to tie its standing record low for the date. ForWilliston, a low of 38 degrees below zero F would tie its standing recordlow.
Tuesday night, the axis of bitter cold will shift south and east withwidespread 20 degrees below zero F likely in the Dakotas to western andnorthern Minnesota.
