Keep tabs on Ukraine travel

The U.S. State Department is urging travelers to avoid unnecessary travel to Ukraine. Viking already canceled a cruise that involved Crimea. Anyone who has any kind of travel booked for Ukraine should keep tabs on State Department advice at www.travel.state.gov.

Tips for wheelchair assistance

Figuring out whether and how much to tip for airport wheelchair assistance is complicated. Bob Diener, president of GetaRoom.com, said travelers first decide if the attendant is a contractor and whether they can accept tips. If so, the tip should be based on time: For a short run between two gates, Diener suggests $3 to $5. For a more complicated situation, $5 to $20.

Travel trend Renovated civil rights museum opens in Memphis

On April 5, a day after the 46th anniversary of the death of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis reopened. Closed for a year and half for a $27.5 million renovation, the museum includes the motel where King was assassinated and exhibits on Rosa Parks, the march on Washington and lunch counter sit-ins. After more than 20 years, the museum needed an update. New films, interactive displays and audio of key figures have been added. A self-guided tour that covers more than 350 years of history starts at the new "Slavery in America" exhibit. A map covering the floor of the room shows slavery's spread and its impact on the world's economy. Set aside more time to walk across the street to the Legacy building, where a display tracks the investigation into King's assassination. Admission is $15. Info at civilrightsmuseum.org

Playing with favorites – or not

Dealscoopr (www.Dealscoopr.com) has some nifty features. The site remembers your home airport, so even if you don't like what you see on your main dashboard of "favorite" destinations, additional travel inspiration is just a click away. On the left nav bar are topic lists such as "most amazing beaches," "top honeymoon destinations," "foodie cities," "family & kid friendly cities" and more. When you select a list, up pop flight deals from your home airport to a dozen locations. I found the flexible search bar particularly useful when trying to nab travel deals.

Hotel check-in

Not Suites, but Virginia hotel is sweet

I knew that I wanted to stay at the Suites at 249 from the moment we passed the little hotel in cute downtown Culpeper, Va. And this six-room hostelry in a refurbished turn-of-the-20th-century building is cool, comfy and inviting. The quarters aren't technically suites (except for one), just very spacious rooms with large — OK, huge — bathrooms. It's all air and light — and sleekness, despite the building's age. The furniture is contemporary and arty. The Suites at 249, 249 E. Davis St., Culpeper, VA 1-540-827-1100; www.suitesat249.com. Rooms from $175.
