Flying solo

Carrie Underwood has been the voice of prime-time football since 2013, although she's been covering Faith Hill's "Waiting All Day for Sunday Night" during the opening credits. But the season premiere of "Sunday Night Football" (yes, we know it's a Thursday edition, but that's still the name of the show) will allow the "American Idol" vet to showcase a new number, "Somethin' Bad," which she originally recorded with Miranda Lambert.

Woman on the verge

Any woman who has been told she can have it all — even after the deadbeat dad has skipped town — will rally around Sam Fox in "Better Things," the new series co-created by Louis C.K. and Pamela Adlon, who previously played his unattainable love interest in that terrific series. As Fox, Adlon gives a bawdy and bewildering performance, a shining example of how TV continues to do a better job than film in delivering multilayered roles for women.

Vive la France

"Chef's Table," the scrumptious series where the focus is more on the cooks than the grub, returns with a batch of new episodes about the very best of France, including L'Arpege's Alain Passard and Maison Troisgros' Michel Troisgros. Watch with a full glass of burgundy.
