Blues sister

Janis Joplin's onstage persona was big, brash — and more than a little intimidating. "Janis: Little Girl Blue," a new edition of "American Masters," does an impressive job of humanizing the blues singer, baring the vulnerable side of a troubled soul who only truly felt at home with a microphone in her hand. Those who have seen the theatrical cut will want to check out new footage featuring Melissa Etheridge, Pink and other Joplin disciples.

'NCIS: Washington'

Michelle Obama might get more street cred appearing on "Girls," but if her aim is to reach the most people, she's made a wise choice in popping up on "NCIS," network TV's most-watched drama. In the episode, Mark Harmon's character stops by the White House to offer his thoughts on helping families of veterans and to persuade the first family that "Summer School" is worth checking out.

Force is strong with 'Person'

Despite having J.J. Abrams as an executive producer, "Person of Interest" was never a buzz-worthy show. Yet, it managed to make it to the premiere of a fifth season, which will be its last. Credit its longevity to unpredictable twists that kept the drama fresh and a likable leading man in Jim Caviezel. Perhaps it could have lasted a bit longer if Abrams had orchestrated a guest appearance by Han Solo.
