Minneapolis police shot and wounded a male who fired at officers after fleeing from a stopped vehicle in south Minneapolis late Wednesday night.

Four officers were involved in the incident near 38th Street and Columbus Avenue S. about 11 p.m., and none of them were injured, said incoming Police Chief Janeé Harteau, who gave this account early Thursday of what happened:

Police went to the area after their ShotSpotter system was activated. Upon arrival, they noticed a suspicious vehicle leaving the area. Police stopped the vehicle, but a male passenger got out. As he was running from the vehicle, he fired at officers.

They returned fire, hitting the male, who was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Harteau said. His condition was not known early Thursday, but police said he is expected to survive. The driver of the stopped vehicle was in custody, Harteau said.

Police had cordoned off an area between 36th and 38th Streets and Chicago and Columbus Avenues early Thursday as they investigated.

The four officers, who have not yet been named, have been placed on standard three-day paid leave.
