The Red Wing Fire Department rescued a stranded hiker Sunday afternoon on Barn Bluff, a popular hiking spot.

Four minutes after the 2:22 p.m. call, first responders saw the hiker dangling 25 to 30 feet above the base of the trail near a climbing wall. The unidentified hiker had been on a trail when he stumbled and fell to the new spot, where he clung to a tree, according to a Red Wing Police Department Facebook post.

Firefighters scaled the trail to get to the hiker, then secured him with a harness and rope before lowering him to safety. The hiker was uninjured and refused medical attention and transportation.

One fire engine, two ambulances and six fire personnel responded to the incident. Police also pitched in by helping transport equipment and assisting in the rescue.

Barn Bluff has five trails that stretch across various parts of the 340-foot bluff. Rescues there are common occurences, said Scott Danielson, captain of the fire department. Danielson said they have to make the climb about twice a year to rescue hikers who strand themselves on the rocks.

"It's a popular spot," he said.

Last month, two artists painted a tribute to Prince near the top of the bluff, but complaints to the city's government caused it to be painted over. After a growing chorus of complaints about the city's act though, the tribute was restored after an overnight painting session.
