Mark Stenglein will resign from the Hennepin County Board on May 31 to become president and CEO of the Minneapolis Downtown Council, it was announced Monday.

A special election will be held in November to fill the board vacancy. The winner will take office immediately after the election and serve two years.

Stenglein said in late February that he had decided to leave the county board after 15 years to join the Downtown Council. He is the board's vice chairman and also serves as chair of the budget and capital investment committee.

Stenglein, 56, of northeast Minneapolis, represents the county's Second District, stretching from Plymouth to St. Anthony and including north and northeast Minneapolis.
