MADISON, Wis. — The state of Wisconsin is warning residents in flooded areas to be on the watch for scam artists working door to door.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture on Friday is urging homeowners cleaning up from flooding to be wary about contractors going door-to-door this weekend promising quick help at a great price.

The state warns that these contractors, sometimes known as "storm chasers," have a history of doing subpar work for high prices or running off with a victim's money.

The state's Consumer Protection division recommends that homeowners call police or the sheriff's department to check out contractors who come knocking. The office also recommends hiring someone based on referrals or a local contractor.
