HONG KONG BALLET

Thursday: Hong Kong Ballet is one of the best-known Asian companies at work today, with a growing international reputation, thanks to artistic director Madeleine Onne. The troupe arrives at Northrop with an adaptation of the opera "Turandot" set to music by Puccini. This sizzling story about a love-triangle is filled with themes of power, lust and revenge. Preshow discussions in Northrop's Best Buy Theater (6:15 p.m. Thu., 6:45 p.m. Fri.) will provide background about the company and the show. (7:30 p.m. Thu., 8 p.m. Fri. $49-$74, Northrop, 84 Church St. SE., Mpls., 612-624-2345, www.northrop.umn.edu.)

SOLO DANCERS, INDIAN STYLE

Opens Thursday: While many are familiar with bharatanatyam dance through the work of local champions of the form Ragamala Dance, often audiences experience it only through a full company performance. But bharatanatyam is a solo dance technique at heart, and now Ragamala's Ranee Ramaswamy, with co-artistic director Aparna Ramaswamy, has created three individual works for company members Jessica Fiala, Tamara Nadel and Ashwini Ramaswamy. It is both a challenge and privilege to have a solo evening, and each of these longtime Ragamala members is surely up to the task. (Fiala, 7:30 p.m. Thu. and Nadel, 7:30 p.m. Fri., $10-15, at The Lab Theater, 700 N. 1st St., Mpls., 612-333-7977, www.thelabtheater.org; Ramaswamy, 7:30 p.m., Nov. 12, free. Carleton College's Weitz Center for Creativity, 320 3rd St. E., Northfield, www.apps.carleton.edu.) C.P

Disenchanted

Opening: Casting Spells Productions brought this slightly twisted musical comedy to Minneapolis last year. It returns for a visit at Illusion Theater, with director Mark Bergren assembling a cast that includes Bonni Allen as Cinderella, Jen Burleigh-Bentz as Snow White and Vanessa Gamble as Rapunzel, Belle and Ariel. These princesses get their noses out of joint for the way they have been treated of late and storm the Disney palace. Raymond Berg and Lori Dokken are music directors. A separate production of "Disenchanted" opens in December for an off-Broadway run. (7:30 p.m. Fri.-Sat., Wed.-Thu., 2 p.m. Sun. Ends Nov. 23, Illusion Theater, 528 Hennepin Av. S., Mpls., $28-$38, 612-339-4944 or www.illusiontheater.org.) Graydon Royce

The Ghost Sonata

Opening: Nimbus has bitten off the challenge of staging this expressionistic play by August Strindberg. A young man meets an old man and they enter a dinner party. It's not about plot. It's about the hell that Strindberg considered life to be and the horrible things people do to each other. Zach Morgan is directing the piece with a big cast. The play was last reviewed in the Twin Cities in 1991 at Park Square. For it to be done right, it needs to be bizarre and unsettling. Sounds like a good time. (8 p.m. Sat., 3 p.m. Sun, 7:30 p.m. Thu. Ends Nov. 23, Nimbus, 1517 Central Av. NE., Mpls., $10-$18, 612-548-1380 or www.nimbustheatre.com.) G.R.
