A St. Paul man is charged with driving into a pedestrian and killing her.

Nu Poe, 19, was charged Monday by the St. Paul city attorney's office with failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, and failure to drive with due care, both misdemeanors.

According to the complaint: Poe drove a minivan into a 66-year-old woman about 6:15 p.m. on Jan. 21. The woman was about three-fourths of the way across White Bear Avenue when she was struck.

The van was traveling south on White Bear Avenue.

The woman, who was walking east to west in a marked crosswalk north of Idaho Avenue, died two days after the collision.

Poe had a driving instruction permit at the time, and had a licensed driver along as a passenger.

"Both the defendant and passenger stated that they did not see the pedestrian crossing the street," the charges said.

Alcohol was not a factor, and the minivan's lights were working. The van was not speeding, and its brakes were working properly.

"A video recording of the collision from a camera of a private business nearby shows that the pedestrian waited until she could safely cross the street and that she was within the marked crosswalk when she was hit," the charges said.
