A series of alleged student missteps before and during the Central High School homecoming dance in St. Paul on Friday led to eight students being disciplined and to the dance floor being shut down early.

School district spokeswoman Toya Stewart Downey said Tuesday that about 100 kids attended an off-campus pre-party during which alcohol was consumed, and that some students then showed up at the dance who either were drunk or showing signs of intoxication.

Eight students have been disciplined, she said. But she declined to say whether any were suspended, citing data practices. According to the district's student behavior handbook, a student can be suspended if they have alcohol or are under the influence at school-sponsored activities. But schools have the discretion to levy lesser penalties, Stewart Downey said.

She said that no one was carrying a liquor bottle.

About 450 tickets were sold to the dance, which had been scheduled to run from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. But the plug was pulled about 9:30 p.m. due to students dancing and touching inappropriately -- despite several warnings from adults that included the switching on of lights, Stewart Downey said.

The incident will have no impact on future extracurricular events at the school, she said.
