St. CLoud - For an elite scorer, Orono sophomore Spencer Overturf is anything but flashy. In fact, the most obvious thing about him is his name, one that seems perfectly suited for a soccer player.

Flashy or not, Overturf came up with a huge effort Wednesday, scoring all three of Orono's goals as the Spartans defeated Faribault in a 3-1 semifinal victory at Husky Stadium.

"Talk about stepping up big," Orono coach Derek Engler said of Overturf. "He's such a team player. On his goals tonight, they weren't dribble, dribble, dribble, shoot. He wins the ball, he makes good decisions with it and he plays simple. That's what we stress to the whole team. Play unselfish soccer and good things are going to happen."

It was Overturf's second goal, in the 52nd minute, that was the defining goal of the game and his level of effort. On a throw in, Overturf won a battle with a Faribault defender, heading the ball into the air, then heading it a second time, popped it over the goalkeeper into the net, breaking a 1-1 tie.

"I just wanted to win the header," Overturf said. "After that, I didn't see what happened. I was just kind of turned around and the ball went into the net."

Faribault (15-6) was making its first state tournament appearance.

The victory was the first in five semifinals appearances for Orono (21-1) and matched the effort of its girls' team, which won earlier Wednesday. The last time one school had two teams both playing for a state title was in 2011 when Benilde-St. Margaret's did it.

"That will be great for the school," Overturf said. "We support the girls and they support us. It's going to be crazy. I'm speechless."
