A former candidate for the Minnesota House and his wife were killed when their car hit a railroad overpass in Savage, authorities said Wednesday.

The crash occurred shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday in the 12700 block of Quentin Avenue, police said.

Keith A. Pickering, 62, of Watertown, was the driver, according to the Hennepin County medical examiner's office. Nathalie J. Pickering, 84, also of Watertown, was the passenger.

Keith Pickering, a computer systems consultant, ran for the House in 2012 as a DFLer and lost in the general election to Republican Ernie Leidiger.
