Charges are pending against a 42-year-old Savage man who is accused of robbing a store in Shakopee at gunpoint on Monday morning, then engaging officers in a high-speed chase and a lengthy standoff.

Sun Path Elementary School in Shakopee and Prior Lake High School and Glendale Elementary School in Savage were locked down for a short time because of the incident, Shakopee police said.

The robber walked into a Famous Footwear store shortly before 11:30 a.m. Monday, showed a handgun and fled with cash from the store and a woman's purse, Shakopee police said. Sometime later, an officer on patrol spotted the suspect's vehicle and tried to stop it. The suspect fled, leading squads from the Shakopee, Savage and Prior Lake police, the Scott County Sheriff's Office and the State Patrol on a chase that, at times, went against the flow of traffic and reached speeds of 95 miles per hour.

Officers tried numerous times to stop the suspect's sport-utility vehicle, using stop sticks and hitting the vehicle with squad cars.

The suspect drove into a Target parking lot off Hwy. 13 in Savage, where he was stopped when a Shakopee squad vehicle collided head-on with the suspect's vehicle. Still, he refused to get out of the vehicle or show both his hands and he told officers he had a gun in the car, police said.

Officers fired nonlethal rounds, breaking the vehicle's window and hitting the suspect several times. At one point, the suspect told an officer to "shoot me" and said he wanted to call his wife to say goodbye, police said.

The suspect eventually left his vehicle and was arrested.
