SHAKOPEE BY THE NUMBERS

• Between 2000 and 2010, Shakopee was the top population gainer in the Twin Cities area by a margin of more than 1,000 people, adding about 16,500 in ten years to top 37,000.

• In 2012, Shakopee had fallen to 16th among metro cities in new housing units, behind places like Otsego. The building research firm Keystone Report reported 79 units, down from 125 in 2011. Shakopee puts its figure at 90. Its main competitors last decade for the top slot, such as Lakeville and Blaine, all had more than 300.

• In an era when multi-family development is becoming more important in many places, Shakopee has seen virtually none for years. City officials blame saturation of that type of development in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
