A trucker hauling cases of wine was spotted weaving along a western Wisconsin interstate before crashing, being pulled from the truck cab and fleeing into a nearby farm field, where he was captured, authorities said.

The scene of the wreck Saturday afternoon was a few miles east of Eau Claire, where traffic was bottled up as responders removed the cargo and righted the semitrailer truck, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.

The driver, David A. Johnson, 35, of Grantsburg, Wis., was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. Johnson has a previous conviction for the same offense.

According to the patrol's statement:

About 3:45 p.m., numerous 911 callers reported seeing the semi "traveling all over the road and onto the roadway shoulders" before it rolled onto one side along Interstate 94.

Several travelers stopped and helped the uninjured driver out of his cab. He then ran into a standing soybean field, prompting four people to chase after him.

A trooper joined in the pursuit, and "after an extended foot chase … apprehended the semi driver."

Once the cargo and the righted truck were moved aside, traffic started flowing again late Saturday.
