The second of three teenagers accused of killing a West St. Paul man in the driveway of his home pleaded guilty Wednesday in Dakota County District Court.

Donovan M. Diego, 19, of St. Paul, was sentenced by District Judge Thomas Pugh to just over 23 years in prison. He will be eligible for supervised release in about 15½ years.

Diego and two others, Christino Rosario and Malik Farmer, both 18, were charged with three counts: first-degree murder and second-degree intentional and unintentional murder in the Jan. 11, 2013, shooting death of Luis Reyes-Galvin, 31. They allegedly went to the victim's home armed with guns they had taken in a burglary in West St. Paul the day before, intending to burglarize the home and rob Reyes-Galvin.

When no one answered the door, the three waited in a nearby SUV, the criminal complaints said. The victim arrived home with his 10-year-old daughter and 12-year-old nephew, parked his car and walked toward the house.

The daughter told police she saw two men approaching her father, one from each side, carrying guns. Reyes-Galvin told the children to go inside. He turned and confronted the men, a fistfight broke out and two or three shots were fired. Reyes-Galvin was shot in the left shoulder, and the shot exited his right chest. He died at Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

Diego pleaded guilty to second-degree intentional murder at a contested omnibus hearing, where defendants usually challenge the evidence against them. The other two charges against him were dismissed.

His murder sentence will run at the same time as a five-year sentence he received in September in an unrelated case of unlawful possession of a pistol in Ramsey County.

Rosario pleaded guilty to second-degree unintentional murder in December. He is scheduled to be sentenced next Thursday.

Farmer has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges. His trial is scheduled for September.
