The Sabo Bridge over Hiawatha Avenue reopened to bikers and pedestrians on Monday after the completion of work to buttress the support cables that hold up the bridge.

The structural modifications involved beefing up plates on the bridge's tower that anchor the cables. The retrofitted plates replace those that broke last February, releasing two of the suspension bridge's cables.

The failure temporarily halted traffic and light-rail service under the bridge, until supports for the bridge deck were added. The bridge was closed to users for three months before reopening. It then closed again in late September for the latest repairs.

The failure of the plates was attributed to wind-induced vibration. The 215-foot bridge opened five years ago and is a key link in the Midtown Greenway.
