Vikings coach Brad Childress has agreed to a contract extension that will keep him with the franchise through the 2013 season, according to ESPN. While the financial terms were not immediately available, ESPN reported the deal is believed to be for between $4 million and $5 million per year.

"I haven't signed anything yet," Childress said after the Vikings completed today's practice. "I haven't read anything yet. I have a document that I have to look at. ... I'm going to go upstairs and read that document and see what it says. I just want to go up and look at the language and that. I'm anal that way."

Childress was in the second to last season of a five-year, $10 million deal he signed in 2006. Negotiations between Childress' agent, Bob LaMonte, and the Vikings have been ongoing. Childress has the Vikings off to an 8-1 start and positioned to win a second consecutive NFC North title. His decision to bring in quarterback Brett Favre in mid-August has worked better than anyone could have expected.

The Vikings have gone from 6-10 in Childress' first season to 8-8 in 2007 and 10-6 and an NFC North title in 2008. That rough first season and offensive play calling that many fans didn't consider creative enough has resulted in Childress' popularity not being very high among some Vikings fans, but he's always had the support of owners Zygi and Mark Wilf.

"I am grateful for the opportunity that I was given," Childress said today. "I have a good group of guys in the locker room, which I've said over and over. I've got a great ownership group who not only am I grateful for them but they've been good owners from the standpoint of empowering us with players. They listen, there is a good dialogue, there is good communication. I don't know what it's like to be an owner, they don't know what it's like to be a head football coach but there's a pretty good repartee that goes on between us and I'm grateful for that communication."

Asked how much he appreciates the Wilfs' continued support, Childress said: "I think the bigger thing is you supply the vision when you're selling yourself for this job and they have to buy into the vision of how you see the Minnesota Vikings going forward. We've been good enough to be able to fulfill part of that vision."

The Vikings have issued their injury report for today and cornerback Karl Paymah has been added because of an ankle injury that limited him in practice. As Chip reported, defensive tackle Fred Evans was full go today after returning from an illness that kept him out Wednesday.

Limited for the second day in a row were wide receiver Bernard Berrian (hamstring); cornerback Benny Sapp (groin); fullback Naufah Tahi (ankle); cornerback Antoine Winfield (foot); and quarterback Brett Favre (hip/groin). Linebacker E.J. Henderson is listed on the report because of a knee issue but has been able to take part in all of practice the past two days.
