New Billboard Twitter Real-Time Charts launched today use social media chatter to rank popular songs.

The "Trending 140" is a constantly updated list of the most talked about and shared songs. The list includes links to play the songs, which move up and down the chart based on social media buzz. A 24-hour snapshot of the chart is also available.

The "Emerging Artists" chart measures songs by up-and-coming singers based on how many times songs are shared over 24 hours.

So what counts as a "share" for the purpose of moving a song up the charts?

Billboard says:

  • the use of, or the inclusion, of a link to the song via music listening platforms, such as Spotify, Vevo and iTunes.
  • the use of various track sharing notations, such as the hashtags "#nowplaying" or "#np," along with song/artist name.
  • the use of various terms associated with song and song playing, such as "music," "song," "track," "listen."

Twitter said, "Each real-time chart will provide a snapshot of the top U.S. hits as well as emerging tracks and artists who are moments away from being discovered."

Twitter users sent more than 1 billion tweets about music in 2013, and musicians hold some of the most-followed accounts. Hello, Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga.

Austin Mahone's song "Shadow" was the first to top the Trending 140 chart.

Both charts will also be summarized weekly for Billboard.com and Billboard magazine.
