Threat locks down Washburn High

Inspired by a bomb threat that closed Minneapolis' Southwest High School for a day this week, someone targeted another high school in town Thursday with what authorities deemed to be an unsubstantiated threat, a district spokeswoman said.

A threat directed at Washburn High School prompted the district to put the school on a modified lockdown Thursday and brought police in for a walk-through that found nothing suspicious, said spokeswoman Rachel Hicks. Students remained in their rooms during instruction. Hicks said district officials "believe this was an attempt to get MPS to cancel school after Southwest's closure yesterday."

Man gets 15 years in drunken crash

A 52-year-old northwestern Minnesota man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for leaving his own picnic drunk and crashing his speeding car, killing two sisters riding with him as he "showed off" his new wheels on a dark country road.

Along with his time in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of criminal-vehicular homicide, James G. Yahnke was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years' probation in the crash about 35 miles south of Grand Forks, N.D., that killed Teja R. Beyer, 21, and Mercedes D. Rowley, 23. The sisters were at a picnic on May 17 hosted by Yahnke at his Nielsville home, said his brother, Robert Yahnke.

Ex-coach agrees to sex-assault sentence

Former high school girls tennis coach Daniel Erik Hubbard Wilson, 27, pleaded guilty Wednesday in Ramsey County District Court to third-degree criminal sexual conduct for sexually assaulting a student he coached at Visitation High School in Mendota Heights. The girl, who is now 17, was 15 when sexual contact first occurred. He will be sentenced April 16, but Wilson has agreed to serve one year in jail and 15 years of probation, during which he must have no contact with the girl or her home, the Fred Wells Tennis and Education Center, Visitation High School or the University of Minnesota's Minneapolis campus. If he violates the terms, he could face six years in prison.
