A Shakopee man was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty to a September hit-and-run that critically injured a 23-year-old man in south Minneapolis.

Kaleb Conway, 26, was sentenced to five years of probation and four months in the Hennepin County workhouse after pleading guilty on Nov. 12 to criminal vehicular operation that caused great bodily harm, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Thursday.

Conway was also ordered to pay $222,000 in restitution to the victim, Luis Cruz-Guzman.

Cruz-Guzman, who attended the sentencing, described his severe head injuries and said he was in a coma for a week after the accident, according to a statement from the attorney's office.

Conway apologized to Cruz-Guzman.

Around 2 a.m. on Sept. 1, Conway was driving away from Merlins Rest Pub, on 3601 E. Lake St., where he had "consumed four alcoholic drinks," when he struck Cruz-Guzman as he was crossing the street, authorities have said.

At the time, Conway's blood alcohol content was .13, according to court documents.

An off-duty Minneapolis police officer heard the collision, then saw a man lying in the street and the car taking off, according to the statement. Conway was pulled over several blocks away and arrested.

He faces 18 months in prison if he violates the conditions of his probation.
