A drug raid in New Brighton on Tuesday turned violent when a police officer shot a suspect, who was recovering overnight after surgery.

The man was in stable condition, but the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office would not release his name, nor details about his injuries, except to say he was shot more than once.

The names of the suspect and the officer are to be released Wednesday morning by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, which is investigating the officer-involved shooting, said Randy Gustafson, a spokesman for the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office.

No officers were injured. Gustafson said the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave, as is standard in officer-involved shootings.

The gunfire came about 2 p.m. Tuesday when members of the Ramsey County Violent Crime Enforcement Team, a multi-jurisdictional unit, were serving a narcotics search warrant in the 1500 block of 20th Av. NW in New Brighton.

"During the process of serving the search warrant, a struggle ensued inside the residence and a suspect was shot," Gustafson said in a news release.

The man was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was under armed guard late Tuesday.

He was the only occupant of the single-family residence, and his neighbors were not in danger, authorities said.

The officer's law enforcement agency was not disclosed. The task force is composed of officers from St. Paul, Roseville, Maplewood, White Bear Lake and New Brighton police departments and also Ramsey County Sheriff's deputies.
