A motorcyclist fleeing police at speeds topping 90 miles per hour pulled into a busy north metro rest stop, crashed and fatally shot himself, authorities said Tuesday.

The man, 38, of Coon Rapids, first caught the attention of police Monday when he brandished a gun in Oak Grove and was spotted in Wyoming, Minn., shortly after 10 p.m., said Wyoming Police Chief Paul Hoppe.

The suspect fled south on Interstate 35 at speeds ranging from 90 to 100 mph, with two squad cars from the Wyoming police, one from the Chisago County Sheriff's Office and another from the State Patrol in pursuit, Hoppe said.

After about 5 miles, the motorcyclist went into a rest area in Forest Lake and crashed through a fence, Hoppe said.

"Before our guys got out of their cars," Hoppe said, the suspect fired one shot and killed himself. No officers fired their weapons, the chief said.

Hoppe said the rest area "was pretty full" with truckers bedded down for the night.

Police were waiting until the man's relatives were notified of the death before releasing his identity.
