A 31-year-old man allegedly killed his girlfriend at the home they shared in Shakopee, and he was arrested nearby late Monday morning, authorities said.

Police arrived at the residence in the 1400 block of Savanna Drive in Shakopee and found the 34-year-old woman's body.

The suspect was apprehended about a mile away, outside the Hampton Inn, police said.

"It got a little hectic there," said Shakopee Police Chief Jeff Tate. "There was a brief standoff."

Tate said the man was taken to a hospital, and has since been booked into the Scott County jail.

Authorities have not disclosed the names of the man or the woman.

They also have not said how the woman was killed, but Tate said that "we don't believe that a firearm was used."

Officers found the woman in the couple's bedroom, and there were obvious signs of trauma, the chief said.

The woman's mother also lived in the home, Tate said. "She thought her daughter was sleeping," he said.

An employee at the hotel told the Star Tribune that he saw police order the man to the ground, and he was apprehended peacefully about 11:20 a.m.

Police emergency dispatch audio disclosed the man's name before his arrest and initially referred to the victim as his wife. The Star Tribune generally does not identify suspects before they are charged.

Liza Dmitruk said Monday afternoon that she and the suspect were married for about six years until 2014 and have two sons.

Dmitruk said her ex-husband had two current girlfriends and was unsure who might have been killed.

The suspect's criminal history in Minnesota includes a charge in 2014 of felony domestic assault that resulted in a conviction for misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

Police would like anyone with information about this case to call them at (952) 233-9400.

They can also send a text to "spdtips" and the tip information to 847411. Police have yet to determine a motive for the killing.
