Police are still investigating a car crash Thursday that killed a 58-year-old Cottage Grove man.

Woodbury police responded to the crash in the 6000 block of Military Road after reports of a car that had gone off the road and crashed into a tree in the residential neighborhood. Witnesses reported that the man, the sole occupant of the car, was unresponsive and noticed that the car had started on fire, police spokeswoman Michelle Okada said.

The witnesses pulled him out of the car as it became engulfed in flames.

"It was just wonderful they got him out," she said.

Paramedics and other emergency personnel transported the man to Regions Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Preliminary results from an autopsy Friday found no evidence of drugs or alcohol in the driver. But other tests are being done to see if a medical condition contributed to the crash, Okada said.
