A person who is believed to have been driving the vehicle that fatally struck a man outside his Alexandria, Minn., home last week has come forward and is cooperating with investigators, police said Tuesday.

Earlier, police said they were confident they had found the vehicle whose driver left the scene of the fatal crash.

But they still had been looking for the driver of the sport-utility vehicle that struck Travis Pennig, 26, between 10:15 and 10:40 p.m. on March 19 near Meadowland Estates mobile home park.

Sgt. Tony Kuhnau said Tuesday night that the SUV is being examined at the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension lab. "This is where we are going to get our next big piece of information," he said.

The person who is believed to have been driving came forward on Sunday, he said. That person is not in custody.

Earlier, acting on a tip, law enforcement seized a vehicle matching the description of one seen in video surveillance photos, police said.

The SUV was recovered in neighboring Grant County, said police Sgt. Kevin Guenther. At that time, he said contact had been made with the owner.

Pennig was standing or sitting next to the curb when he was hit, Police Chief Rick Wyffels said.

Anyone with information regarding this case is urged to call police at 1-320-763-6631.

Pennig was a stay-at-home father who lived with his fiancée, Corrie Michelle Pennig, and their 4-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter, said family friend Heather Wulfekuhle, who started an online fundraising effort to support Pennig's family.
