Detroit – Penn State scored three goals in the last 10 minutes of the opening period en route to a 4-1 victory over Michigan on Thursday in the second quarterfinal of the Big Ten hockey tournament at the Joe Louis Arena.

Nate Sucese scored the eventual winner at 13:24. David Goodwin's goal with 29 seconds left in the first made it 3-0, and Vince Pedrie made it 4-0 just 1:03 into the second. Peyton Jones made 30 saves for fourth-seeded Penn State (22-11-2). James Sanchez scored for Michigan (13-19-3).

Ohio State 6, Michigan State 3: The No. 13-ranked Buckeyes (21-10-6) scored three goals in the first four minutes of the third period to beat the Spartans in the first quarterfinal game.

David Gust got the first two of those goals for third-seeded Ohio State. His power-play goal at 25 seconds broke a 3-all tie. His 18th goal of the season, at 1:38, made the scored 5-3. Tanner Laczynski completed the OSU flurry at 3:51.

After trailing 2-0, the Spartans (7-24-4), the sixth seed in the tournament, took a 3-2 lead in the opening period on Sam Saliba's power-play goal at 14:20. Brendan Kearney of OSU had the only goal in the middle period.

"We know we're a very offensive team," Gust said, when asked his thoughts after the first period. "And we knew the chances were going to come, we just had to stay positive."
