One man was killed and another injured in a crash in Circle Pines early Sunday that apparently was caused by speeding.

The crash was reported at 2:49 a.m. on the 4500 block of 85th Avenue. Officers found a severely damaged car off the road, according to the Centennial Lakes Police Department, which provides protection for Circle Pines.

The driver, a 24-year-old man from Shoreview, had been thrown from the vehicle and was dead at the scene. His passenger, a 24-year-old man from Fridley, was injured and taken to a hospital.

"Speed appears to be a factor in the crash," police said in a news release, adding that extra patrols will be out through Labor Day. The identities of the men have not been released.

On Saturday afternoon, a Maplewood man was killed in a two-vehicle collision near Pine City, Minn.

The State Patrol said William Joseph, 50, was headed west on Hwy. 70 when another man driving north in a pickup truck ran a stop sign and hit Joseph's car, killing him.

The truck's driver, Danny Kitterman, 48, of Waite Park, Minn., was not injured. The patrol said alcohol was detected in his system.

The crash occurred a day after the state Department of Public Safety began its latest drunk-driving enforcement campaign. According to the department, 225 DWI arrests were made statewide on Friday, according to a preliminary count.
