A Brooklyn Center man has been sentenced to a 25-year term for firing shots from a car in north Minneapolis and killing a 32-year-old man from Eagan.

Jamal K. Newell, 35, received credit for 17 months in jail since his arrest and will serve roughly 15¾ years of his sentence in prison and the balance on supervised release.

Newell pleaded guilty in September in Hennepin County District Court to second-degree murder for killing Michael D.W. Polk on Aug. 7, 2016. The gunfire also wounded another person with Polk.

Questioned soon after the Sunday afternoon shooting near 35th and Penn avenues N., Newell told police that he and Polk were gang rivals.

Newell's criminal history in Minnesota includes convictions for assault, robbery and illegal possession of a firearm.
