Gophers at a glance: Top-seeded Minnesota (21-13) overcame a slow start and an injury to point guard DeAndre Mathieu to outlast High Point 88-81 in its opening game of the NIT on Tuesday. … Mathieu aggravated a bruise on his left hip and seldom-used senior guard Maverick Ahanmisi took advantage of some extra playing time to score a career-high 21 points. … Mathieu said the hip feels "fine" after receiving treatment this week. He was originally hurt in the Gophers' loss to Wisconsin on March 14, but head coach Richard Pitino expects Mathieu to be full speed against St. Mary's.

Gaels at a glance: St. Mary's (23-11) comes to Williams Arena fresh off a 70-58 win over Utah on Tuesday. "We have a lot of respect for this team," Pitino said. "They have proven players." … Junior forward Brad Waldow and senior guard Stephen Holt were both All-West Coast Conference selections, and are the team's two top scorers at 15.5 and 14.9 points per game, respectively. … The Gaels won 20 games for the seventh straight season — and for the eighth time under coach Randy Bennett — and finished the regular season fourth in the WCC.
