A high-ranking Minneapolis police officer plans to run for Hennepin County Sheriff this fall, taking on two-term incumbent Rich Stanek. Deputy police chief Eddie Frizell filed his papers Tuesday just before the deadline to become Stanek's only opponent in the Nov. 4 election.
Stanek, a former Minneapolis police officer and state legislator, has held the office since 2006. Frizell joined the MPD in 1993 and was named deputy chief in late 2012. He also served in the Minnesota National Guard as a Lieutenant Colonel, returning from a year's posting in Iraq in 2011.
