A motorcyclist died in a collision with a golf cart being driven illegally Saturday on a residential street in Wright County.

Eric Lefebvre, 51, from nearby Buffalo, was killed. Lefebvre had been an obstetrician and gynecologist in Buffalo and Monticello since the late 1990s.

Lefebvre, a husband and father of four, was wearing a helmet at the time, the Sheriff's Office said.

The golf cart was being driven by Korie A. Schiel, 39, of Chaska. Schiel was treated for minor injuries and released.

The Sheriff's Office is investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash, including why the cart was on a road that doesn't lead to a golf course.

The operation of a golf cart or other "low-powered" vehicles on streets is illegal in Wright County and many other parts of Minnesota, said Sheriff's Capt. Todd Hoffman. Still, the practice "is getting more popular around the state," the captain said, particularly in areas such as this one, where there are cabins and a number of lakes.

Schiel has a lengthy record of traffic violations, including two convictions for drunken driving, and for driving without a valid license, speeding and careless driving.
