M.A. Mortenson Co. unveiled the design of its first building in the massive makeover of downtown Rochester that's being called Destination Medical Center.
The more than 60,000-square-foot building, which will be located at the corner of SW. 4th Street and 2nd Avenue SW., will be designed for life science research and have numerous amenities.
"With its close physical linkage to Mayo Clinic, this building will provide an authentic urban experience that supports a unique environment for community amenities, collaborative culture and a one-of-a-kind innovative ecosystem," Mortenson said in a statement.
Construction is planned to begin late this year and scheduled to finish in 2019. Mortenson will own and operate the building. Its cost hasn't been finalized.
The structure is part of the 16-block Discovery Square subdistrict.
Last year, Mayo Clinic revealed its vision for Discovery Square which is an integral part of the 20-year plan for the DMC.
The building was created to help occupants better collaborate with each other and test and build new products. The new building is designed by RSP Architects and HOK.
"One of the project's guiding design principles is to create something completely different for Rochester and for life science research," Jon Buggy, principal of RSP Architects, said in a statement. "Life-enhancing scientific and therapeutic breakthroughs will happen here."
The local office of Colliers International will serve as the leasing agent for the building.
"Development of Discovery Square is a major step forward for the world of life science research," Eli Hoisington, HOK's design principal, said in a statement. "Discovery Square will be a bridge to the mission of Mayo Clinic."
