Celebrating today With more than 80 local chapters and a volunteer force of 1,600 members, the Minnesota Women of Today have been busy. Now celebrating its 60th year, the organization started as the Minnesota Mrs. Jaycees and changed its name in 1985. This year, it's focused on the Shriners, with chapters collecting toys, electronic items and toiletries for families and kids, especially teen boys undergoing medical treatment.
During the anniversary celebration at its winter convention last month at the Doubletree in St. Louis Park, the group honored members of the community, including high school senior Katie Spoden, who received a $500 scholarship. Women of Today are always thinking about tomorrow.
Hitting high notes Even though there were no children at WAMSO's annual Vintages of Note fundraiser, they were definitely on the mind of attendees.
The evening out, which involved wine from four vineyards, was designed to support Kinder Konzerts, a program that brings preschool age kids into Orchestra Hall to hear music and try a cello, and sends musicians into schools to talk about orchestral music.
"These children have never experienced this type of music," said Eloise Breikjern, executive director of the organization, which provides support for the Minnesota Orchestra and promotes music education.
The Feb. 6 event at the Graves 601 Hotel in Minneapolis raised $145,000 for the program, now its 32nd year -- a good reason to raise a glass.
